Different types of thread of floss
This time I want to talk to you about “threads of floss”. There is so much to say about this that I could fill an entire Embroidery Sheet with it! In this blog I will limit myself to (a part of) the embroidery threads.
Six-strand embroidery floss
By far the most common embroidery thread is six-strand embroidery floss. This is a mercerized cotton, twisted in 6 threads. By splitting the threads of floss you can, for example, use 1, 2 or 3 strands at the same time to obtain the desired thickness.
The most famous brand is DMC Mouliné. This is available worldwide in 500 colors. DMC is also usually indicated in embroidery patterns. Another well-known brand is Anchor, but much less available. A cheaper alternative is Venus floss. I think a disadvantage of this is that you always have to renumber all patterns.
Single thread
For this too, there are many types, sizes, and brands available. At Soed Idee, we recently started selling Sulky thread. Sulky® Cotton Petites 12 embroidery thread is a strong cotton thread and is ideal for handicrafts. The thread is thicker (1 strand of Sulky thread is approximately equal to 2 strands of DMC) and provides a soft, warm, natural look.
From Aurifil, we also have wool thread: Aurifil Lana 12 wt. 12wt wool is ideal for cross-stitching with a single strand. It adds texture and depth. Lana wool is also beautiful for traditional hand embroidery. A single or double thread gives a hand-spun appearance. It also produces great results when appliquéing with the blanket stitch on wool fabrics, using a single or double thread. Perfect for creating a primitive look!
We also have a 100% linen thread from Anchor in our range. Linen is naturally beautiful! Although the thread may be somewhat irregular, it provides a beautiful matte, natural appearance.
Hand dyed or gradient threads of floss
In addition to the “regular” six-strand floss in solid colours, there are also many brands of gradient floss, usually dyed by hand. Certainly with the increasing popularity of embroidery, there are more and more companies that dye embroidery threads and fabrics themselves.
These threads are basically just cotton six-strand floss, but they get an extra dye bath (or more), so that the color is not completely solid. This gives a lively effect to your embroidery. At Soed Idee we have a number of collections in our range, which are the most common.
The America brands Classic Colorworks, Gentle Art and Weeks dye Works all have an extensive color palette and a subtle gradient, as well as the Romanian Valdani threads of floss. The Australian Cottage Garden Threads has a somewhat “more intense” gradient and often has several color nuances in one thread. If you embroider with gradient thread, you embroider cross by cross, for the best effect of the gradient thread (so no half crosses back and half crosses back). Also be careful with washing. Not all floss is colorfast. That in itself is not a problem, but it does require special treatment if you do want to wash your embroidery.
Silk
We have been selling silk threads of floss from Au Ver a Soie at Soed Idea for a while now. This is a 100% silk floss, which is also available in many qualities and thicknesses for all kinds of different applications.
This is a split floss with 7 threads in a color palette of no less than 623 colors. It is a strong floss with a beautiful shine. 1 thread is slightly thicker than a DMC thread, which also gives good coverage.
In addition, at Soed idea we also have the Soie 100/3 garen, this is a single threaded silk, which is very thin and therefore especially suitable for embroidering on the finer fabrics. This is available in 291 colours. In the same color palette of 291 colors we also have Soie Perlee floss. This is a thicker thread that is used in free embroidery and open stitching, etc., among other things. I must confess that I also have the Perlee yarn because it is on those cute wooden bobbins 😉 .

Ik wil gaan experimenteren met enkeldraads borduurgaren bij het vrij borduren omdat het zo’n mooie glans het en een ander effect geeft. Dank je voor je informatie over de toepassing daarvan. Ik heb eens iemand horen vertellen dat ze haar borduurwerk met chloor heeft moeten behandelen nadat er inkt overheen was gevallen. De kwaliteit van het DMC-garen heeft zich toen bewezen: het verkleurde niet! Het borduurgaren van Action is duidelijk slechter van kwaliteit: het gaat pluizen tijdens het borduren en het heeft niet die mooie zijdeglans van DMC.
Hallo Jeannette, Dit kun je voorkomen door het garen voor gebruik te spoelen.
Hoe kan je voorkomen dat handgeverfd garen doorloopt als het borduurwerk gewassen moet worden?
mijn moeder borduurde met dmc en had al een redelijke voorraad (in de brousse moest ze dat wel hebben), maar bij terugkomst in belgie en groter wordend gezin, bleef het handwerken wat achterwege - ik heb echter wel de goesting overgeerfd, en heb aan al mijn broers en zussen bij verjaardagen, en feestactiviteiten gevraagd om het boeketje bloemen te vervangen door de dmc-kleurstrengen die ik nog niet had (bloemen vergaan en dit garen blijft wel heeeel lang bestaan) - zo heb ik nu alle 500 kleuren en kan naar hartelust borduren. de ondervinding met de andere merken is dat ze soms kunnen uitlopen bij het wassen, terwijl dmc echt kook-en wasvast is ! veel borduurplezier aan allen.

Wat fijn deze uitleg van al die garens. Ik heb al een aantal keren geborduurd met verschillende handgeverfde garens. Binnenkort ga ik borduren met Cottage Garden Threads. Het zijn echt Australische kleuren en die ga ik dan ook gebruiken voor Australische patronen.
Dank voor de interessante uitleg, Simone. Ook ik blijf fan van het DMC garen. De grote DMC kleurenkaart met meer dan 500 kleuren erop is mijn liefste handwerk bezit. Inmiddels heb ik 450 kleuren. Van enkelen nog een paar draadjes en van anderen een half of heel strengetje. Het verloop-garen vind ik fantastisch, ik werk er graag mee. 1 draad verloop-garen met 1 draad passende kleur erbij geeft ook een goed effect.

Goede uitleg ! Ik heb altijd tot volle tevredenheid met DMC geborduurd en blijf daar ook bij. Mijn voorraad is nu dermate groot dat ik niet meer ga veranderen. Zeker nu ik ernstige artrose heb en het borduren zo goed als zeker minder zal worden: helaas ! 😥
